2019 Omega Masters results: Rory McIlroy lost at the play-off

Rory McIlroy could not win in the competition with four opponents in the play-off pit on the day of the closing of the European Tour in Switzerland.

One week after winning the FedEx Cup, Rory McIlroy attends the second European Tour event in the 2019 season (excluding events belonging to both PGA Tour and European Tour systems). He played impressively in the first three rounds of Omega Masters and was always in the championship group.

In the final round, McIlroy catches the beat slowly and is abandoned by the upper opponents five strokes after nine holes. But the 30-year-old star returned strongly in the second half of the competition day, earning five birdies in the last seven holes and making no more mistakes. At hole 18, his tee shot in the woods left McIlroy at risk of bogey, but the third put the ball on the green perfectly helps him preserve the total score of -14.

At hole 18, McIlroy team player Sebastian Soderberg has a chance to monopolize the top of the table if he successfully rips a birdie from six feet away. Even so, Swedish golfer just put the ball close to the crater. In the rear group, Andres Romero suddenly rose to get the same score -14 after three birdies from hole 14 to hole 17. The Argentinian Golfer will be champion if birdie is in the 18th hole. But the great pressure makes Romero miss the fairway and only par point.

In addition to these three golfers, Lorenzo Gagli and Kalle Samooja also have a total score of -14 to create the largest group of champions in the 47-year history of Omega Masters. The year the golfer enters the first play-off hole is the 18th hole. Here, only Soderberg hits the fairway, the remaining four players take the ball into rough grass or sand traps. But in the second stroke, Rory McIlroy is the best flag attacker when putting the ball closer to the hole than the opponent.

Samooja was soon out of the game because he needed a bogey putter to get the ball into the pit. Romero only reaches par due to having to swipe from the green edge. Meanwhile, Soderberg successfully deceived the birdie from a distance of 12 feet, putting great pressure on the other two. McIlroy, at a distance of half the size of Soderberg, missed the birdie after the ball shook the crater. Gagli then failed the birdie trick, accepting Soderberg's coronation.

"This is my seventh event in eight weeks," McIlroy shared about his schedule. "I think it is difficult to avoid playing so much. This week, not playing well in the third round made me pay. But today I have reached the highest level. Unfortunately, not enough to win the championship".

Omega Masters is the 200th European Tour event of McIlroy's career. Thanks to the T2 achievement of this tournament, he climbed to 31st place in Race to Dubai. Owners of four major titles will continue to participate in the European Tour's end-of-season events, in order to have the opportunity to compete for the best 50 golfers' DP World Tour Championship.
