OFFICIAL: Chelsea appointed Frank Lampard as head coach

The former England midfielder Frank Lampard returned to lead the old club Chelsea under a three-year contract.

"I am proud to return to Chelsea as coach", Frank Lampard said after the signing ceremony.

"Everyone knows my love for this club as well as the history that we used to share. However, my highest priority now is work and prepare for the season ahead. I come here to contribute, help the club achieve more success and eager to start work".

According to the announcement on Chelsea homepage, Lampard's contract has a term of three years. Excluding temporary coaches, Lampard is the 10th manager to sign a long-term contract by Chelsea, since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club in the summer of 2003.

As a player, Lampard spent 13 years in Chelsea, becoming the club's legend with 648 matches and 11 titles, before leaving from summer 2014. He played for two more years in Manchester City, New York City. then retired in summer 2016.

Lampard started his career last summer with Derby County in the Championship. And even in the first season as a coach, the player born in 1978 brought Derby to the final play-off match against the Premier League. Although Derby lost to Aston Villa in that match, Lampard was still impressive enough to persuade Chelsea to invite him back as manager, vacant after Maurizio Sarri returned to lead Juventus.

Lampard can bring two fellow coach members from Derby County, Jody Morris and Chris Jones to the new coaching team at Stamford Bridge.
