Lionel Messi won The Best 2019 award

Lionel Messi surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil van Dijk to win the FIFA Player of the Year award, on the night of September 23rd.

This is the sixth time the Barca superstar won this award, after winning in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015. Messi has spent an excellent season, helping Barca win La Liga and enter the UEFA Champions League semi-final. He personally won the European Golden Shoe with 54 goals in 58 matches in all competitions. At the national level, Messi and Argentina lost in the Copa America semi-final against Brazil.

Van Dijk helped Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League and was awarded the best player by UEFA. However, the Dutch center-back came in second. Previously, many people thought that he might make a surprise at this year's awards ceremony because of his impressive performance and the foundation of Liverpool's success last season.

Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend The Best awards ceremony in Milan. The Juventus star finished third in the poll after helping Juventus win the Serie A title and is the club's best striker in every arena. Ronaldo also crowned the Nations League with Portugal.

Messi received 46 points compared to 38 points of Van Dijk and 36 points of Ronaldo in the final voting round. FIFA solicits opinions from coaches, captains of national teams and prestigious journalists around the world. Voting criteria are based on the player's performance from July 16th, 2018 to August 19th, 2019.

In the women's category, Megan Rapinoe won the best player award after helping America win the World Cup. She beat fellow countryman Alex Morgan and English player Lucy Bronze in the poll.
