Nguyen Cong Phuong helps Vietnamese football to surpass Thailand again

By signing a 1-year contract with the club Sint Truidense VV, Nguyen Cong Phuong will not only become the first Vietnamese player to play in Belgium but also become the first Southeast Asian player to compete in the No. 1 tournament of this country.

Thailand used to have a player for Belgian clubs. Thai number one goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan, who let Nguyen Anh Duc score in the 2019 King's Cup recently, played for OH Leuven club in Belgium's second division under a five-year contract.

Up to this time, Kawin had 11 major matches for OH Leuven in Belgium's second division (2 matches in the 2017-2018 season and 9 in the 2018 - 2019 season).

Two other Thai players, Eakachai Phonthongthin and Teeratep Winothai, have also been to Belgium. Eakachai Phonthongthin competed for the Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the second division of the 2012-2013 season but was not very successful.

Thailand's "prodigy" Teerathep Winothai plays for SK Lierse, also in the second-place prize in the 2008-2009 season. He was allowed to play 8 matches (6 matches in the second division, 2 national cup matches) and scored a total of 3 goals. After the first season in Belgium, Winothai returned to Thailand and went to Muangthong United.

Thus, the 3 Thai players who come to Belgium will only play for the clubs in the second division while Nguyen Cong Phuong will compete in the 1st league of Belgian football and it will be a pride for Vietnamese football, help them surpass Thai people in terms of player export.
