Former V.League 1 outcast set to return to Vietnam via a million-dollar deal

Midfielder Lee Nguyen is reported to come close with a contract with Vietnamese side Ho Chi Minh City FC.

V.League 1 reigning runners-up are willing to pay heavily to bring Lee Nguyen back to Vietnamese turf and the sum could reach a record-breaking millions of dollars.

Lee Nguyen started his career in one of the most successful clubs in the Netherlands PSV Eindhoven in 2006. At that time, the attacker was the teammate of numerous stars like former Chelsea defender Alex, former Barcelona midfielder Ibrahim Afellay and the legendary Patrick Kluivert in his last days.

Nguyen’s enormous potential earned him a spot in the United States national football team, where he had 9 caps.

The 33-year-old began his first period at the V.League 1 in the colors of Hoang Anh Gia Lai in 2009 but was quickly pushed away to another Vietnamese side Becamex Binh Duong in the next season.

Nevertheless, in three short years in one of his home countries, the Vietnamese-American footballer was mostly known for his relationship scandals with beauties rather than his performances on the pitch.

The talented yet controversial player made his way to the United States, where he resurrected his career at New England Revolution in 2012. He made his mark in the second season with stellar demonstrations on the field, scoring 20 goals in just 17 appearances and gaining a spot in the MLS Best XI. After New England Revolution, the attacking midfielder also roamed across Los Angeles FC and Inter Miami.

Along with the upcoming signing of Lee Nguyen, Ho Chi Minh City FC showed their ambition by bringing “Vietnamese Messi” Nguyen Cong Phuong back to Vietnam from Sint-Truidense V.V.

The Vietnamese side started off their season with a 2-2 draw against Yangon FC in the group stage of the AFC Cup and with the complementation of Lee Nguyen, they are aiming for greatness.
