Myanmar U22 manager: 'Our goal in SEA Games is the gold medal'

With 7 points after 3 games, Myanmar U22 is leading Group A. But their top target is not just to qualify for semi-finals in the 30th SEA Games.

Although Myanmar U22 did not have the best form in SEA Games, somehow they managed to dominate in Group A at the moment.

After drawing Malaysia U22 in the first match, they had back-to-back winnings by defeating Philippines U22 and Timor Leste U22.

So far they just need one more point against Cambodia U22 to play in the semi-final match. However, head coach Velizar Popov's vision aimed at higher achievements.

As he said, Myanmar qualified for semi-finals in two previous SEA Games tournaments, and they even reached the final match four years ago.

Because of that, this year Myanmar U22 should compete for the highest prize, the gold medal. To do that, positive results in group stage matches are just stages of the preparation.

"People talk too much about strong teams as Vietnam U22 or Thailand U22, but they are not our concerns at present", said Popov.

"Finding their weak points to take advantage is just a thing we need to do in the knock-out stage. Before that, we should prepare well in the match against Cambodia U22. We have some problems with midfielders, therefore, we have to fix those positions as soon as possible. Only by doing that can we go on aiming to become the champion in SEA Games".
