Bahrain crowned the Gulf Cup for the first time in history

Saad al-Romaihi's goal gave Bahrain a minimal victory over Saudi Arabia, thereby helping this nation win the Gulf Cup for the first time in history.

In the previous encounter in the group stage, Saudi Arabia won Bahrain easily 2-0. And in the final, Salman Al-Faraj & his teammates was the better team in the first minutes. Even when getting a golden chance on the 11m spot, captain Al-Faraj missed unfortunately for Saudi Arabia.

The first half ended with a 0-0 draw in the caution of both teams. However, the turning point came in the 69th minute, when Sayed Redha Isa Hashim passed the ball from the right-wing to set Mohamed Saad al-Romaihi to open the score for Bahrain.

In the remaining minutes, Saudi Arabia pushed up the whole team to find an equalizer but they failed. In the end, Bahrain created a big shock when winning the 2019 Gulf Cup.

This is also the first Gulf Cup title in Bahrain football history. Previously, this national team had 5 times finishing runner-up in the tournament.

Bahrain football is making great progress, especially in the World Cup qualifiers of 2022: Hélio Sousa's team is ranked 2nd in Group C with 9 points. Remarkably Bahrain won against Iran and drew Iraq in this important campaign.

‎‎Competition: 2019 Gulf Cup

At the 2019 Gulf Cup, Saudi Arabia did not play well in the first match. They lost Kuwait by a 1-3 score, which made them must win both remaining games. Unless doing that, they would be eliminated soon at the group stage.

In this situation, luckily, Saudi Arabian players improved after each match. They beat Bahrain and Oman by 2-0 and 3-1 scores, respectively, to top Group B at the preliminary round.

However, those are not the most impressive performances of Saudi Arabia in the 2019 Gulf Cup. In the semi-final match, their opponent is Qatar, the current champion of Asian football.

Facing a great team having many big stars namely Almoez Ali and Akram Afif, Saudi Arabia managed to defend solidly, then took advantage of punishing the host nation. As a result, they won thanks to the only goal of young talent Abdullah Al-Hamdan.

In the case of Bahrain, they played a very difficult game against Iraq at the semi-finals. After 120 minutes played, two teams stepped on the penalty shoot-out.
