Vietnam to host Olympics Playoff behind closed door

Vietnam women’s football team will not have fans backing their performance on the second leg of 2020 Olympic playoff against Australia on March 11.

Authorities stated that the match will go on behind closed door over concerns of COVID-19.

The match will be held in Cam Pha stadium in northern Quang Ninh province.

The Matildas have 1 hand on the ticket to qualify for 2020 Olympics after thrashing Vietnam 5 – 0 in the first leg on Friday, March 6.

Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) spokesman stated that the match organizer decided not to open ticket sales to the public due to the “complicated development of COVID-19 outbreak”.

"Spectators should not come to the stadium area... avoid large public gatherings, to ensure effective prevention of the outbreak," according to VFF’s official website.

Vietnam was the pioneer in the region to postpone the national league as well as all sporting competitions to prevent further spread of the new coronavirus.

All games in the season-opening round of Vietnam's top football division V.League 1, which are held from March 6 to 8, will be played behind closed doors.

However, Vietnamese authorities said the country's inaugural Formula One race would go ahead as scheduled on April 5.
