Korea Republic Women 3-0 Vietnam Women (2020 Women's Olympics Qualifiers): The East giants prevailed on home ground

Korea Republic women’s football team has prolonged their winning streak against Vietnam by defeating The Golden Girls 3-0 in the last match of the 2020 Olympics Qualifiers’ third round.

The Taegeuk Ladies demonstrated their dominance right after the whistle with continuous high quality attacks and Vietnam’s defence can only hold up till the 23rd mitute. A cheeky lob from Jang Sel-Gi defeated the Vietnamese goalkeeper and opened the score for Korea Republic.

After breaking the deadlock, the Koreans continued to increase pressure but the well-organised defence of Vietnam kept the score at 1-0 until the end of the first half.

The second half witnessed a similar situation whereas Vietnam seemed to struggle in moving the ball forward and could only be compact in their own third and except to hand over the ball possession to the women in red.

Korea kept going with their diverse attack strategies and the formation shifted fluidly to confuse their opponent. And confusion along with the lost of concentration did occur to the Vietnamese. A bouncy shot from Choo Hyo-Joo in the 53rd minute made the goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh committed a mistake, letting the ball slip through her hands.

2-0 down, Vietnam tried their best to push forward and had some moments successfully moving the ball inside Korea Republic’s box but did not really create a clear chance.

On the other hand, the Taegeuk Ladies stayed loyal to their tactics and gradually progressed the ball with their maestro Ji So-Yun at her top form. The 2013 Asian Women’s Footballer of the Year created many goal-scoring opportunities and scored a stunner herself in the 83rd minute.

With two wins, Korea Republic entered the play-offs as the winner of group A and Vietnam although suffered from a heavy loss, also got a spot in the final stage of the 2020 Olympics Qualifiers as the group’s runners-up with 3 points from the win over Myanmar in the previous match.

As for group B, apart from Thailand that has already been eliminated after two losses, China PR, Australia and Chinese Taipei are all having 3 points and the doors to the play-offs are still open to all.
