Edson Tavares, the former head coach of Vietnam, officially confirmed that he will coach the defending Indonesian Liga 1 champion, Persija Jakarta.

On the club's Facebook page, Persija Jakarta announced Edson Tavares will be the team's coach for the rest of the season.

Talking about his plans in Indonesia, Mr. Tavares said his immediate goal is to spend all his energy to bring the most successful team in Indonesian football history back to the winning path.

“I am very happy to come to Persija. I hope I can help the team out of the current predicament. I want to win a lot here”, he said.

Tavares has been Persija's third coach this season after Ivan Kolev and Julio Banuelos. He is expected to have a deep understanding of Southeast Asian football that can help the team escape the current predicament.

Persija is in serious crisis as it sinks into the relegation spiral. In the Indonesian Liga 1, The Kemayoran Tigers is currently ranked 14th among 18 participating teams. Their difference with the top team (Bali United) is up to 28 points.

In the last 19 matches, Persija Jakarta has only won 4 victories. In the last match on September 27, they also lost to Borneo FC with a score of 0-1.

63 years old, Edson Tavares has had a long career training in many different areas. Most recently, he led Yokohama FC in the Japanese Second Division (J2 League). Before that, he also led many famous teams such as Al-Hilal FC (Saudi Arabia), Chongqing Force Fan (China), Sepahan (Iran) or Al Salmiya (Kuwait).

Tavares has been appointed head coach of Jordan and Haiti national teams. In 1989, he was the assistant coach for the Chilean national team.

Tavares has twice led Vietnamese teams in 1995 and 2004. At the latest guidance, he did not leave much impression when the Vietnamese team was eliminated from the Tiger Cup (now the AFF Suzuki Cup) right away. from the group stage. In the V-League, he also tried himself to lead The Vissai Ninh Binh Club in 2009.

Tavares' first match in the new position was the match between Persija Jakarta and Persela Lamongan in the 21st round of Indonesia Liga 1. The match will take place on October 2nd at Patriot Candrabaga Stadium.
