Voice of Thailand: It is impossible for the 10 Southeast Asian countries to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup

Thailand Football Federation President Somyot Poompunmuang (FAT) has called for a clear plan from Southeast Asian governments to co-organize the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha announced at the 2019 ASEAN Summit in Bangkok last week that Southeast Asian countries will join hands to bring the biggest football tournament on the planet to Southeast Asia.

Earlier, many foreign ministers from Southeast Asian countries made this proposal before the leaders of the region.

However, it seems that the football authorities of the countries in the region remain silent about the plans related to the World Cup bidding. And Somyot has now called on governments to clarify their position on the move.

The Bangkok Post reported that the president of FAT submitted a detailed plan regarding the bidding process to government officials.

"Right now, everything depends on governments [if they really want to host the World Cup", the Bangkok Post quoted Somyot as saying.

“I learned that Indonesia is ready [for a general package]. But it is impossible for 10 Southeast Asian countries to host the World Cup together. Maybe only two or three countries participate”, he said.

The Australian Football Federation recently revealed that they had talks with Indonesia about joint bidding for the 2034 World Cup and welcomed other Southeast Asian nations to join them in this effort.

"If the government is serious about this issue, I will talk to the FIFA football management agency about the package", Somyot added.
