Malaysian voice: 'A group of 3-4 Southeast Asian nations should co-host the 2034 FIFA World Cup'

Malaysian Football Federation President (FAM) Mr Hamidin Mohd Amin voiced his support for his Thai counterpart Somyot Poompunmuang's opinion. The reaction of the two presidents when it comes to the fact that all 10 Southeast Asian countries hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup is the same.

“All 10 ASEAN member countries cannot jointly organize the 2034 FIFA World Cup. There can only be two or three countries” Mr Somyot Poompunmuang Thailand Football Federation President said recently.

It also seems to be the opinion of FAM President Hamidin Mohd Amin when he said that Southeast Asia will face bitter opposition from Japan and South Korea if there are more regional members hosting the FIFA World Cup  2034.

“Remember, when you are hosting a World Cup - for example (if we look at it) the United States, Canada and Mexico for the 2026 tournament - they will automatically qualify. In Southeast Asia it is a bit different and 10 countries cannot co-host together” FAM President told the New Straits Times.

This is because if bidding is successful, all countries will want to attend and positions (of the AFC countries) for the World Cup after the 2026 World Cup will be eight plus one (reserved for owners) home)” he said. "Even if only five or six countries participate in the bidding, Japan and South Korea will not let that happen and will not agree". Mr Hamidin Mohd Amin told the New Straits Times that it meant cutting tickets from other Asian countries would be cut.

FAM President said that a bidding of three, or at most four, countries would be the right direction if ASEAN was serious about bringing the biggest football tournament on the planet to Southeast Asia.

“The idea (implementing a general package) is a good idea, but it is not easy to qualify for FIFA World Cup. Although people may think that FAM cannot win the World Cup in the usual way and therefore, they are trying to do it by becoming homeowners” he dismisses claims that Malaysia is seeking. a ticket to the FIFA World Cup by becoming the home team.
