Thai stars in J League uncertain to join the national team at the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Thailand manager Akira Nishino is reluctant to call up stars playing in the J1 Leauge for the upcoming tie at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers due to the concern over COVID-19.

Kawin Thamsatchanan, Theerathon Bunmathan, Chanathip Songkrasin and Teerasil Dangda are Thailand internationals playing for clubs at the J1 League. Given that Japan is one of the most heavily infected countries in the world with 331 confirmed cases of having the virus with 6 deaths, Thailand head coach is considering not summoning these players as a safety measure.

Thailand are expected to host bottom-of-the-table Indonesia at Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok on March 26 in matchday 6 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers second round group G. The four players competing in Japan are all backbones of the Thai national team and if they really are absent in the upcoming match, it will be a significant losses for the War Elephants.

The tie against Indonesia is considered to be a golden opportunity to gain points to continue Thailand’s World Cup dream. Thailand is ranking 3rd in the group with one point less than second-place Malaysia.

Nevertheless, with the ban on mass gathering activities of the Thai government, the match itself can still be postponed, given that the same decision was made with the ties at the Thai League.
