This was revealed by Vice President Edwin Tong of FAS in an exclusive interview with the Straits Times.

“We still want to be on the world stage, so we need to get started. There are still 15 years left until 2034. So, you may only see 8, 9 to 14, 15 year old boys and if you can develop this program with that goal in mind, it will Help us achieve a lot of good things, ”Mr. Tong, who is also a senior minister of the Ministry of Health and Law, told the Straits Times.

The 2034 World Cup was set up with a 48-team format when the 32-team format is expected to end at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. And increasing the number of participating teams (8 teams from Asia) can help new countries qualify for the tournament.

ASEAN nations have also attempted to bring the World Cup to the region in 2034. This was announced by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at the 2019 Southeast Asian Summit earlier this year.

It should be noted that Singapore launched the "Goal 2010" in 1998 in hopes of qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However, Singaporeans are still not eligible to participate in the biggest football tournament on the planet.

“More opportunities will open. Regional powers will obviously be South Korea, Japan, Australia, there may be some Middle Eastern, Saudi Arabia and Iranian countries, followed by Uzbekistan, Central Asia, and of course Southeast Asian teams”, Mr. Tong said.

“We can see it as a goal. So that is not unrealistic, but it is not easy”, he added.

Singapore is located in Group D of the second qualifying round for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 AFC Asian Cup finals along with Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Palestine and Yemen. They will face Yemen football team in their opening qualifying match on September 5th.
