Saving the defense, coach Simon McMenemy called Brazilian-born Otavio Dutra to confront Vietnam

Coach Simon McMenemy has summoned the Brazilian-born defender Otavio Dutra to prepare for the match against Vietnam in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Indonesia is having a bad qualifying campaign, losing all three matches and conceding 11 goals against Malaysia, Thailand and the UAE. Therefore, coach Simon McMenemy decided to increase the personnel before receiving Vietnam in Bali on October 15th. The chosen one was Otavio Dutra, a defender born in Brazil but who was naturalized in Indonesia.

"I have always dreamed of playing for Indonesia since I came here to play in 2010. For 10 years here, I pray every day to help the team. Playing for Indonesia, the country I love is the dream of my life", Otavio Dutra shared on the Indonesian Football Confederation homepage.

Dutra was born in 1984 in Brazil, used to be a youth team of Juventus SP and Corinthians. He went to Indonesia to play football in 2010, won the Super League with Persipura Jayapura in 2013 and once ascended to the Liga 1 in 2017 with Bhayangkara.

Coach McMenemy expects the presence of Dutra will help the Indonesian defense stronger. The 34-year-old center-back of Persebaya Surabaya arrived in Bali yesterday and this afternoon will practice the first training session with the team.

Indonesia is at the bottom of Group G, and has to receive intense criticism from fans. They are required to play a game before Vietnam to regain face despite having no hope of going forward. In contrast, Vietnam is having four points after a 0-0 draw on Thailand and winning 1-0 when facing Malaysia in My Dinh stadium.

The match between Indonesia and Vietnam took place at 19:30 (GMT+8) on October 15th.
