Coach Simon McMenemy still manages Indonesia to confront UAE & Vietnam

After much controversy, recently, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has decided to still use coach Simon McMenemy for the next two matches with Vietnam and UAE in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying round.

Indonesia is in Group G of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying round (AFC) along with Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and UAE. In the first 2 matches, the team of thousands of islands could not win any points when they lost 2-3 to Malaysia and 0-3 to Thailand. Indonesia are currently at the bottom of Group G.

After 2 losses in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, especially the 0-3 loss to Thailand, coach Simon McMenemy has received a lot of criticism from the fans of the island nation. They said that he did not have the ability or qualifications to lead the national team of this country. Even Mr. Yunus Nusi - a member of PSSI executive committee shared with the press in this country:

“We initially chose coach Simon McMenemy because of the success he achieved with Bhayangkara club. However, after the last two matches, I personally feel he should leave the national team coach seat".

However, during a recent PSSI meeting, the highest authority of Indonesian football announced that it would continue to give coach Simon McMenemy the opportunity in the next two matches with Vietnam and UAE, Mr. Gusti Randa - PSSI CEO shared:

"After the meeting with the permanent members, we decided to keep the head coach behind. We only had one month to prepare for the match against the UAE so if he fired he would risk it. Mr. McMenemy would continue to lead Indonesia in the match versus UAE. We asked him to improve the team's game after the last 2 matches, both in terms of tactics and non-professional issues".

With the opportunity given to the Scottish coach, it is likely that the Indonesian team will continue to be boycotted in the match against Vietnam on Bung Karno Stadium on October 15. This happened in the match against the Thai Lan team in the previous round.

The Indonesian team will move to the UAE to meet the hosts at the next match of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on October 10th. After 5 days, they will welcome the Vietnamese team on the Bung Karno Stadium. If they are not possible to have good results in these two matches, the chances of going to the third qualifying round of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers (AFC) for Indonesia are much smaller.
