Thai star Chanathip Songkrasin set a goal to help Thailand win the top group in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier to gain the slot to the next round.

Thailand is on the same table as the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia in Asia's second round of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The top team of eight groups and the best four runner-up teams will enter the third and final round of Asia. They will also win the position in the 2023 Asian Cup finals.

Elephants will start their campaign before Vietnam on their home turf on September 5th.

"My goal is to help the national team to top Group G. I want to win all matches of the group stage," Chanathip, striker of Japanese club Consadole Sapporo, said.

He is likely to play alongside Theerathon Bunmathan and Thitiphan Puangjan, both of whom are also playing in Japan.

This will also be the first match of Japanese coach Akira Nishino as the coach of Thailand's national team.

Earlier, Akira Nishino, who led Japanese national team to advance to the round of 16 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, suggested that three Thai stars playing in Japan could be key players in Thai squad

“No matter who the national team coach is, we still have to learn from that person. We have to adapt to your tactics", Chanathip Songkrasin said.

Historically, Thai football has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals.
