Son Heung-min becomes the first Asian footballer to reach the 50-goal mark at the English Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur star and Korea international Son Heung-min has carved his name into history as the first Asian player to score 50 times at the English Premier League (EPL) with his strike in the match against Aston Villa.

It was 1-1 draw at nearly the end of the first half of the tie between Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in matchday 26 of the EPL when Son Heung-min stepped up to take the penalty for the London side. Although he missed in his original attempt, the 27-year-old managed to squeeze a goal from the follow-up.

The goal not only put his team ahead before the break, but it also marked the 50th goal of Sonny at the EPL – a feat that no Asian footballer has ever done it before. Breaking records is not something new to the attacking star.

The Korean has been all-time Asian top scorer at the Premier League since he surpassed the legendary Park Ji Sung (19 goals) with his 20th goal in the match against Crystal Palace in matchday 11 of the 2017/2018 season.

He has been awarded Best Footballer in Asia for three consecutive years (2017, 2018, 2019) and a 2019 Ballon d’Or nominee.

The talented striker started his career in the Bundesliga in the colors of Hamburger SV and then Bayern Leverkusen. Nevertheless, his career just truly took flight with the move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Son Heung-min has been the leading scorer of The Lilywhites this season, especially when Harry Kane is suffering from a long-term injury. With his stellar form, new heights are expected for the Korea international in the future.
