REVEAL: Man United demanded Chinese club to refund Dong Fangzhuo's transfer fee after terminating his contract

On this day fifteen years ago, Dong Fangzhuo became the first Chinese football player who played for Manchester United. However, things did not happen as he wanted.

In 2004, after joining Manchester United, Dong Fangzhuo was named alongside Robben, Mascherano, Chiellini, Ronaldo, and Rooney on the shortlist for the Golden Boy award.

That suggestion recognized him as one of the most talented football players in the world at that time. Dong himself proved his ability by scoring 34 goals in two seasons he played for Belgian club Royal Antwerp.

As a result, Sir Alex Ferguson recalled him for Man United first-team squad in 2007. "He is an outstanding player who has all qualities making him become a top scorer", said Sir Alex.

"He is tall, very strong in the air, good in ball control, and he can score with his both feet". Nevertheless, Dong could not fight for a regular position in the starting lineup because Man United had too many world-class strikers.

Plus the injury Dong suffered in 2008, the club decided to terminate his contract. But it was a part of the story about Dong.

When he left for Man United in 2004, the English club paid £500,000 for Dalian Shide, which could have risen to £3.5 million depending upon his performance.

However, at that time, Man United asked the Chinese team for a clause in the transfer contract. As it followed, Man United had the right to demand Dalian Shide to refund the transfer fee if Dong's performance could not make their satisfaction.

Consequently, when Man United terminated Dong's contract, they also asked Dalian Shide to repay £500,000.
