Wu Lei to miss China national team preparation bootcamp for FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Espanyol’s star striker Wu Lei will not attend the China national team’s training spell in Dubai, UAE prior to the ties at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers to focus on salvaging the La Liga side from relegation.

China are set to face the Maldives on March 26 and Guam on March 31 at Chang Arena in Buriram, Thailand, a neutral venue due to the concern over the escalating of COVID-19.

Team Dragon will come to Dubai, UAE on March 3 and start their training spell to prepare for the upcoming crucial matches. Nevertheless, they will not be accompanied by their biggest star Wu Lei.

The Chinese Football Association approved Wu Lei’s request to stay at his governing club to help them escape the relegation berth.

Espanyol are ranking 20th out of 20 participating clubs at Spanish top-flight competition La Liga and are struggling to stay at the league. They will need their best squad to achieve this goal, including their second best goal scorer of the season, Wu Lei, who netted 7 times in all competitions until now.

Nevertheless, the China national team also need their leading striker at his best shape in order to gain crucial points from the upcoming ties to get closer to the next stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

The match against the Maldives will be Li Tie’s first official game as the head coach of the China national team since he replaced Marcello Lippi, who resigned after the humiliating 1-2 defeat to Syria at the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers itself in November, 2019.
