Naturalized player Elkeson nominated for Chinese Golden Ball Awards

Brazilian-born Chinese guy Elkeson (Ai Kesen) became the first Chinese naturalized player who received the nomination for the Chinese Golden Ball Awards.

Recently, CFA released an announcement that named the nominees for the 2019 Chinese Golden Ball Awards. Interestingly, for the first time in Chinese football history, a naturalized player was included in the three-man shortlist.

It was Elkeson, the international player who was playing for the Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande. He was named alongside the veteran Hao Junmin and Ronaldo of China Wu Lei for the honor Chinese Footballer of the Year.

2019 marked as an unforgettable year to Elkeson after playing six years in China. He became the first naturalized player who was called up to the China national football team squad.

At the international level, Elkeson performed impressively with three goals in the first two matches. His appearance helped coach Marcello Lippi resolve the problem with Chinese local attackers, who did not know how to pass or shoot properly.

After Elkeson, many other foreign players said that they were ready for the chance to become a part of Chinese football. Becoming naturalized players and receiving a Chinese passport meant Elkeson must give up his Brazilian nationality.

However, he did that after seeing his bright future as a Chinese player. In July, he returned to his former club Guangzhou Evergrande after three years playing for Shanghai SIPG as a local, not a foreign player.

Consequently, his salary moved up sharply from six to ten million euros a year.
