AFC coming to an agreement with FIFA to postpone competitions

The AFC and FIFA have come to a joint decision to put the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in Asia on halt owing to the wariness of COVID-19.

Previously, many ties at the Qualifiers were postponed individually as a safety measure to contain the spread of the deadly virus. Nevertheless, after the meeting last week between the AFC and FIFA, all matches in the Asian Qualifiers of the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be pushed back till October and November.

However, some ties can still take place during the international windows in March and June if there is mutual consent between the teams involving and the AFC as well as FIFA.

Also in the meeting, the AFC Futsal Championship 2020, which is simultaneously the qualifying stage of the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2020, was decided to be postponed until August. Originally, the tournament was due to commence from February 26 till March 8 but has been put on hold ever since.

On the contrary, the women’s Olympic qualifiers will still happen according to plan, excluding the match between Korea Republic and China PR, which is now set to take place in June.

Further actions from the AFC and FIFA will be taken according to the development of the epidemic.
