OFFICIAL: VAR technology will be applied at the 2020 AFC U23 Championship

Thailand will put VAR technology into the matches in 2020 AFC U23 Championship. Before that, they were rejected by FIFA when they wanted to bring VAR into the clash with Vietnam in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

"FIFA and IFAB have allowed Thailand to use VAR in the 2020 AFC U23 Championship. The use of VAR will have likes and dislikes but we will do the best we can to help fair matches", Mr. Benjamin Tan, Director of Development and Licensing Club of the Thai Football Federation, said (FAT).

Thailand is the host of the 2020 AFC U23 Championship. The tournament is held from January 8-21, 2020.

Previously, FAT also wanted to apply VAR to the opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Thailand and Vietnam. However, FIFA refused to grant this host's permission.

There are 16 teams at the 2020 AFC U23 Championship, in which Thai hosts, defending champions Uzbekistan, runner-ups Vietnamese and Qatar are ranked in the first seed group.

At the AFC U23 Championship 2020 draw today, the host Thailand U23 is located in Group A with very strong opponents like Iraq, Australia and Bahrain. Group B is a 'death table' consisting of Qatar, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

Whereas, Vietnam U23 fell into Group D with DPR Korea U23, Jordan U23 and UAE U23. According to Asia's leading football experts, this is the most breathtaking group.

Group C is considered the most balanced talent, where the presence of defending champions Uzbekistan, Korea, China and Iran. Of these, South Korea and Iran are the two leading continental football platforms and have repeatedly qualified for the World Cup finals. South Korea U23 was the only team to reach the U23 AFC championship semi-finals in Asia three times in the previous organization.

The tournament is held in 4 stadiums: Rajamangala Stadium, 700th Anniversary Stadium, Tinsulanon Stadium, Thammasat Stadium.
