Thailand still eliminated without VAR, said Saudi U23 coach

Sharing in the press conference after the first quarter-final, head coach Saad Ali Al Shehri said that the Saudi Arabia U23 team will still win the match without the penalty goal.

The Thai U23 team ended the dream of attending the 2020 Tokyo Olympics following the 0-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia U23. The only goal was made on the 11m spot by Al-Hamdan. In a foul situation, the referee consulted VAR technology before making a decision to allow the Saudi team to take the penalty kick.

In the post-match press conference, Saudi U23 coach Saad Ali Al Shehri refused to comment on the referee's decision. However, he said that his team would win even if they were not allowed the 11m kick.

“I would like to say thanks to my students who played so hard. We had a lot of difficulties in the first 15 minutes as Thailand was excited by the cheers of the home audience. But after that, we gradually dominated the game.

"In the second half, we played better. Thankfully no player receives a yellow card. We will have the strongest force in the semi-finals”, said coach Al Shehri.

The Thailand U23 team continues to show weakness in terms of physical strength in this match. Entering the second half, they could not maintain the offensive and control of the ball as in the first half.

Coach Al Shehri continued: “The Thai U23 team does not have many opportunities in this match. We are a better team. I believe we can still score even if we don't get the penalty".

Saudi Arabia U23 team is the first team to win the semi-finals of the AFC U23 Championship 2020. Coach Al Shehri's team only needs one more win in order to achieve the Olympic Tokyo 2020's slot.
