Qatar U23 bring 8 senior team members to Thailand

To aim for the champion of AFC U23 Championship, coach Felix Sanchez called up 8 players who belonged to Qatar national football team.

They were goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Bakri, defenders Homam Ahmed and Ahmed Al-Hamawende, midfielders Tarek Salman, Abdullah Al-Ahrak, Abdelrahman Moustafa, and two strikers Hashim Ali and Yusuf Abdurisag.

They were considered new talents of Qatari football after the generation of Almoez Ali and Akram Afif. Some of them were called into Qatar national football team squad to compete at the Asian Cup qualification round, as well as the 2019 Gulf Cup in which Qatar was the host.

At the 2020 AFC U23 Championship, Qatar U23 was drawn into Group B with Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. They were expected to crown the champion, but things would be very hard for them.

Their strongest opponent at Group B was the Japan U23 team guided by coach Hajime Moriyasu, who aimed for winning the tournament to prepare well for the 2020 Olympics men's football event.

Besides that, Saudia Arabia and Syria U23 also called many senior team members into the squad. Moreover, Qatar U23 team usually played very bad at major competitions.

Two years ago, they were eliminated at the Asian Games men's football event after three consecutive winless games, including two defeats against Bangladesh and Uzbekistan. As a result, the chance for Qatar U23 to win AFC U23 Championship was very small.
