Missing the rest of SEA Games 30th, maybe also 2020 AFC U23 championship: Nguyen Quang Hai's tragedy comes from VFF's greed

Due to the serious injury, Vietnamese star Nguyen Quang Hai cannot attend the rest of the 30th SEA Games, and may even miss the 2020 AFC U23 championship. So what is the reason for his tragedy?

A shock to Vietnamese football fans came in the 20th minute in the match between Vietnam U22 vs Singapore U22, as star Nguyen Quang Hai was strongly crushed by Irfan Fandi, causing the captain of Vietnam U22 in pain.

Anyone has watched Nguyen Quang Hai in recent years, the collision with Irfan Fandi is not the key reason to cause the important midfielder of coach Park Hang Seo to be injured so quickly.

Quang Hai is a very smart attacking player who has an instinct to avoid dangerous situations so that the captain of Vietnam U22 team left the field with an injury case is really too surprising.

According to statistics, from the beginning of 2019 to the present time, Nguyen Quang Hai is the Vietnamese footballer who plays the most after 60 appearances in all teams and all levels, from club to national and U23 shirt.

More specifically, the Hanoi midfielder played 24 out of 26 matches in the V-League 2019, 13 matches in the AFC Cup, 2 matches in the qualifying round of the AFC Champions League, 3 matches in the National Cup in the shirt of Hanoi club. At the national team level, Nguyen Quang hai had 5 matches in the Asian Cup 2019, 2 matches in the King's Cup, 5 matches in the World Cup qualifiers, and the latest 3 appearances at the 2019 SEA Games.

With his importance to every Vietnamese team level, Quang Hai is almost breathless after each tournament. For example, just 24 hours after the match against Thailand in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier, he had to join Vietnam U22 to attend the SEA Games 30th.

The number of Quang Hai's matches in 2019 is obviously too much for a Vietnamese player, also Southeast Asia footballers in general who are not in good condition like professional European colleagues.

But to take Quang Hai to this serious injury, Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) is to blame. After a series of successful football campaign in recent 2 years, VFF still urges coach Park Hang Seo to bring the best squad to win the SEA Games 30th gold medal.

In contrast, FAT does not set a harsh goal for Akira Nishino in Manila, as the Japanese tactician spoke after coming to SEA Games: 'My objective at this campaign is not the gold medal, but keeping my boys safe and avoiding injuries'.

That is the reason Thailand U22 has no intention to use over U22 years old players to SEA Games 30th, although they can do that. Otherwise, coach Nishino also uses key players like Supachok, Supachai, Kritasada, Suphanat limitedly in the SEA Games 30th group stage.

The same applies to Malaysia, as coach Ong Kim Swee does not call the best wonderkid of this nation: Safawi Rasid. Overall, Safawi played about 37 official matches in 2019 (not counting friendly), with 3,088 minutes running on the field. So Malaysia does not want to exploit their biggest star too much.

Nguyen Quang Hai's injury certainly comes from overload, coach Park Hang Seo clearly knows this but cannot stop as his captain is very important for Vietnam U22, and the order from VFF is too high.

And now, it is time for Mr. Park and VFF to pay the price when Nguyen Quang Hai cannot play in the rest of SEA Games 30th, maybe also 2020 AFC U23 championship - a much more important campaign.

Such a tragedy for Vietnamese football, and especially Nguyen Quang Hai - the AFF Player of the Year!
