After two goalless draws, Vietnam U23 will have to depend on the result of the other match in Group D to decide whether they can advance in the competition.

Some match-fixing incidents happened before in history, in which both teams playing in one match could benefit from the outcome that may ensure their chance of advancing. In 1982 FIFA World Cup, The "Disgrace of Gijón" is the name given to the match between West Germany and Austria.

With the outcome of that match already decided, a win by one or two goals for West Germany would result in both them and Austria qualifying at the expense of Algeria, who had defeated West Germany in the first game. The match ended 1-0, as West Germany overcame Algeria on goal difference to went on with Austria to the knock-out stage.

Another case was in the Euro 2004 group stage, as two Scandinavian teams Sweden and Denmark created a 2-2 scoreline to eliminate title contender Italy.

Although both teams furiously denied the match-fixing accusation, it was confirmed later on by the Swedish football magazine Offside. There are conversations in the match between the players indicating a specific result that was captured.

Now in the AFC U23 Championship 2020, Vietnam U23 could be the bitter victim. In the final matches of Group D, a must-win performance must be conducted by Park Hang Seo and his players against an eliminated DPR Korea U23.

But fate is not in their hands. Whatever the scoreline is at that match, if UAE U23 and Jordan U23 hold out for a draw with goals, the runner-up will be eliminated. But if it is a goalless draw or a win for either team, the chance of advancing for Vietnam U23 is broad and bright.

Not only a good performance could save Vietnam U23, but luck must also be on their side. If they are ultimately eliminated either because of the fixed result in the other match or the short-upcoming performance against DPR Korea U23, they can only have themselves to blame.
