Jordan team captain optimistic about qualifying for Olympic

Midfielder Noor Al Rawabdeh says that the top target of his team at the 2020 AFC U23 Championship is to gain a ticket to play at the Olympics men's football event.

In the past, the best result of the Jordan U23 team at the AFC U23 Championship competitions was the bronze medal. In the 2013/14 event, they surprised the audience by beating Oman, Myanmar, and UAE U23 teams to advance to the semi-finals.

After losing to Saudi Arabia, they met South Korea U23 again in the third-place match, when they defeated the opponent in the penalty shoot-out. Since then, they could not repeat that result at the 2016 and 2018 events. However, things may change at the current tournament.

"We are ready to beat the strongest opponents", said captain Noor Al Rawabdeh, who is playing for Jordanian club Al Jazeera as a defensive midfielder.

"Unlike the previous tournaments, many members of our team prepared well after playing in the WAFF championship and the Asian Qualifiers with the first team. For me, I also had great experiences when I played at the AFC Cup with my club in two consecutive years".

"Consequently, I believe that I and my teammates can do the same thing as we did at the 2013 tournament, which means qualifying for the 2020 Olympics men's football event".

Al Rawabdeh also revealed that Jordan U23 team found some troubles in the preparation for the competition when some players got injuries. However, they are ready to challenge other competitors.
