Asian football will reach another historic milestone with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system making its full tournament debut at the upcoming AFC U23 Championship Thailand 2020.

Having made its successful debut from the quarter-final stage of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 in January, the AFC U23 Championship Thailand 2020 will be the first AFC competition to implement the VAR system in all 32 matches.

"FIFA and IFAB have allowed Thailand to use VAR in the 2020 AFC U23 Championship. The use of VAR will have likes and dislikes but we will do the best we can to help fair matches", Mr. Benjamin Tan, Director of Development and Licensing Club of the Thai Football Federation, said (FAT).

With the aim is to rectify clear and obvious mistakes in match-changing situations, the VAR will support the decision making process in four scenarios relating to goals, penalties, direct red cards and mistaken identity.

The VAR can suggest a review, but only the referee can initiate it by making a sign of the rectangle. The referee is supported by the VAR in two ways: using the information received from the VAR for factual decisions or personally reviewing the incident at the referee review area for decisions that require an interpretion on-field review. Lastly, the referee always makes the final decision.

Based on the phylosophy of "Minimun interference, maximum benefit", the VAR will certainly improve the quality of the tournament, as well as the quality of the young players.
