CONFIRMED: Lee Kang In and Paik Seung Ho fail to join South Korea U23 team

The current clubs of Lee Kang In and Paik Seung Ho did not allow them to leave for the South Korea U23 team to compete at AFC U23 Championship.

Initially, coach Kim Hak Bum wanted to call up one of the players who were playing in Europe. Among many names, the best possible candidates were Valencia midfielder Lee Kang In and Darmstadt midfielder Paik Seung Ho.

As a result, when KFA released the 23-man squad list of the South Korea U23 team, they left a vacancy to wait for their response. However, both Lee Kang In and Paik Seung Ho could not join the team due to clauses in the contract between them and current clubs.

Spanish giant Valencia pointed out that AFC U23 Championship was not a FIFA A-Match Day period, so they had no obligation to allow Lee Kang In play for South Korea U23 team.

German club Darmstadt had the same answer in the case of Paik Seung Ho, so they did not allow him to join the U23 team despite they had no match in January. Consequently, coach Kim Hak Bum had no choice but calling defender Yoon Jong Gyu.

The first and foremost goal of the South Korea U23 team at the AFC U23 Championship is to advance to the semi-finals. By doing that, they will qualify for the group stage at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics men's football event.
