CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CURSE AGAIN: No one defend AFC U23 Championship's glory in history

Up to the tournament held in 2020, the teams that won the AFC U23 Championship in previous years have all become former champions.

Since being held until now, the AFC U23 Championship has never witnessed a team successfully defend the title or runner-up. Teams that have reached the final in the previous tournaments cannot replicate their achievements in the following years.

Iraq U23 and Saudi Arabia U23 won the title and runner-up respectively in 2013, but could not reach the final in the 2016 AFC U23 Championship. The same with the South Korea U23 and Japan U23 teams (2016 AFC U23 Championship) and recently the case of Vietnam U23 and Uzbekistan U23 (former champion and runner-up of 2018 AFC U23 Championship).

After losing in the semi-finals against Saudi Arabia U23 on January 22nd, Uzbekistan U23 officially became the former King. They still have the opportunity to compete for a ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic against Australia U23 in the 3rd place play-off.

AFC U23 Championship is an important tournament for Japan and SouthKorea - 2 Asian giants have rarely been absent in the Olympic Games in recent decades.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CURSE AGAIN: No one defend AFC U23 Championships glory in history

The curse of AFC U23 Championship makes fans remember the same thing applied to UEFA Champions League. Since the 1992/93 season when the tournament named UEFA Champions League, no clubs could win this Cup for the second consecutive years.

Up until 2016/17, Real Madrid is the first team to break this curse, as Florentino Perez's team retained its glory, following by another Champions League glory in the next season.
