Nishino's future guaranteed ahead of Thailand's Olympic qualifier campaign

Football Association of Thailand President - Somyot Poompanmoung recently spoke out to ensure the future for coach Akira Nishino regardless of the results at the upcoming 2020 AFC U23 Championship.

The 2020 AFC U23 Championship will be held from January 8-26, 2020 on 4 big stadiums in Thailand. As the host, the Thai Football Federation sets a very high goal of reaching the top 3, thereby winning the ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The pressure is on the shoulder of coach Akira Nishino, as Thailand U23 fell into the relatively difficult group against Australia, Bahrain and Iraq. Furthermore, he did not have the strongest team because key midfield Ekanit Panya could not attend due to injury.

Understanding the difficulty of coach Akira Nishino, recently the Football Association of Thailand president - Somyot Poompanmoung spoke up to ensure the future for the Japanese strategist so that he can focus on the upcoming tournament at home.

"According to the new contract signed, the memorandum and terms have been agreed by both sides. Head coach Akira Nishino will continue to stick with Thai football for another 2 years compared to the old contract. The signing will take place before the 2020 AFC U23 Championship.

Results in the upcoming tournament will not affect coach Akira Nishino's new contract, because the Football Association of Thailand aims for a long-term plan. Thailand's goal with the Japanese strategist will be to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the number of participating teams is increased. That's why right now, coach Akira Nishino is actively working with the U18 or U23 generation of Thai football to achieve this goal".

Thus, Mr. Akira Nishino will lead the Thailand national football team, the U23 as well as the Olympic team until 2021. His salary is unpublished, however Thai media reported that Nishino gets no less than 1 million USD per year.

On December 30th, coach Akira Nishino officially announced 23 players to attend the 2020 AFC U23 Championship. The most notable name on this list is Benjamin Davis - the young star who plays for the Fulham club. In addition, the core of Thailand U23 is still the players who have attended the SEA Games 30th such as Supachai Jaided, Supachok, Suphanat or Anon.
