2020 AFC U23 Championship: Malaysia may replace Thailand to become host

Vietnam, Malaysia and Australia were in the race to host the 2020 AFC U23 Championship in case Thailand was selected and in danger of being deprived.

The Thai Football Federation (FAT) is racing day by day to find alternatives to the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiangmai. If they do not meet the stage of organization, Thailand will be deprived of the right to host and eliminated from the 2020 AFC U23 Championship as the home team.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) supports Thailand the fastest to hand over four stadiums in December, a month before the tournament. In addition, the AFC must also prepare a contingency plan in the worst case that FAT did not meet the yard standard in the last inspection.

On September 23th and September 24th, AFC representatives will come to Thailand to work for the last time before this unit makes a decision. The host can commit to complete before the handover date, but AFC must consider the feasibility to actively decide the host country instead of Thailand 4 months before the tournament (January 8th, 2020).

Vietnam can become one of the countries selected if it is ready. In February 2018, Vietnam, along with Thailand, Malaysia and Australia were the four countries competing for the right to host the 2020 AFC U23 Championship. AFC decided Thailand, but now everything is not going on schedule.

Talking about the opportunity for Vietnam to replace Thailand for the 2020 AFC U23 Championship, General Secretary of the Vietnam Football Federation Le Hoai Anh declined to explain: "I cannot say in the context of the assumption." The VFF's move is in contrast to Malaysia, Australia, Iran or Saudi Arabia.

Thai media asserted that Malaysia is most likely to become the replacement host. U23 Malaysia will automatically take Thailand's attendance because Mr. Lee Tan-hoe's team are eliminated in the qualifying round. Thailand U23 also eliminated but was special with a capacity as the home team.

Malaysia and Australia became the replacement candidate is not strange, because they have run for the 2020 AFC U23 Championship. Iran and Saudi Arabia are two new names, rumored to want to bring U23 players in Asia to go to their nation to compete.

A senior AFC leader told: "Currently, we have not made an official decision about this". AFC still respects and hopes Thailand will complete the progress of improving the field. If the host of the tournament has to change, many things will happen in the next 3 months.
