Philippines is doing everything possible to bring Jordan Clarkson to 2019 FIBA World Cup

Gilas Pilipinas is waiting for FIBA's answer on the issue of Cleveland Cavaliers player nationality

Recently, Bong Go, the newly elected Senator, has made clear his determination to help Jordan Clarkson to appear in the Philippine squad for FIBA World Cup 2019. Previously, he had a meeting with representatives of the Philippine Basketball Federation (SBP) to reaffirm the goal of convincing FIBA about the case of the defender playing in the NBA.

"Hope Clarkson will play. I will fight for that goal. It was an honor for an NBA player to wear a jersey for Gilas Pilipinas to the entire nation. I met the heads of SBP and told them that I would do everything to Jordan Clarkson to FIBA World Cup".

Currently, SBP is waiting for FIBA's decision on whether Jordan Clarkson will own Philippine nationality before the age of 16. If the World Basketball Federation says yes, the Cleveland Cavaliers player will be able to play in the Philippines as a local player.

Otherwise, the defender playing in the NBA will be counted as a naturalized player. Under the Asian FIBA law, each team has only one naturalized player and Jordan Clarkson will have to compete with Andray Blatche. At ASIAD last year, Jordan Clarkson wore the Philippines when Blatche was banned.

Another hurdle for the Philippines is that Clarkson is playing his final year in Cleveland Cavaliers and will become a free agent next summer. It is likely that the former Los Angeles Lakers defender will refuse to come to China to minimize the possibility of injury.
